It`s Wildlife Wednesday! 🌟 Ever spotted a bird that looks like it’s doing laps around a tree trunk? 🌳Meet the Treecreeper! We photographed these little climbers the other day at along the west lakeside at Trentham, and they put on a great show if you knew where to look!

True to their name, Treecreepers spiral up tree trunks, searching for insects hidden in the bark. They use their long, thin bills to pluck out prey and brace themselves with their stiff tails like an extra limb. It’s climbing, bird-style. They’re active and fairly common, but easy to miss. Their mottled brown backs blend perfectly into the tree, while that bright white underside flashes as they move!

Fun fact: the collective noun for Treecreepers is a “spiral”, thanks to their corkscrew climb. Once they reach the top of a tree, they’ll fly back down to the base of another and start all over again.

Native to the UK, Tree Creepers don’t have large territories and some stick to just one tree their whole lives!

Tree Creepers can be confused with the Nuthatch "Sitta europaea", as both species can be spotted searching for insects on tree trunks. However, Nuthatches are able to scuttle up and down tree trunks, whereas Tree Creepers can only travel up tree trunks. Nuthatches have orange breasts, blue/grey wings and a distinctive black streak running across their eyes.

Next time you’re walking the lakeside at Trentham, stop by a tree and look closely. You might spot a tiny spiral working its way upward! 🌲
