Join our knowledgeable wildlife rangers and discover how to identify native trees in winter. You’ll learn how to spot key features such as buds, lenticels, catkins and twig morphology, along with some of the fascinating facts and folklore connected to these species! 🍃
With Chinese New Year upon us and 2026 being the Year of the Horse, one particularly interesting and easy tree to identify at Trentham is the Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), more commonly known as the Conker tree. 🍂
Although not a native species, Horse Chestnut has been naturalised in the UK for hundreds of years. When in leaf, it’s recognised by its huge, palm-like leaves divided into 5–7 toothed leaflets. In winter, however, it stands out for a different reason – its large red-brown sticky buds, which point upwards and give the tree a distinctive appearance. 💮
How did the tree get its name, and what do horses have to do with it? There are two commonly shared theories! One links beautifully to winter tree identification: when the leaf stalk falls away, it leaves a horseshoe-shaped scar. The other relates to the tree’s historic use in treating respiratory ailments in horses. 🏇
