Trentham Gardens is buzzing with dragonflies and damselflies right now! 💙✨
From the dazzling blue emperor dragonfly, the UK`s largest native dragonfly, to the delicate large red, common blue and azure damselflies, the lake is alive with colour and activity from these insects. Keep an eye out and you might spot them darting across the water, hunting other insects or searching for a mate! 🪰🌿
Within this post you will find an incredible photo capturing a pair of damselflies `in tandem`, a fascinating part of their breeding behaviour. The male clasps the female behind her head as they prepare to reproduce, before she lays her eggs among the lake`s vegetation or straight into the water (depending on the species). Whilst she is doing this, the male will guard her from any other males who want to breed with her! 💙
The best way to see these amazing insects? Take a weekend boat trip and enjoy a unique view of the lake, where dragonflies and damselflies can often be seen skimming across the water`s surface! 🚤☀️
